The Pleasures of Boiled Rice

The first time I visited Kerala, I was about five years old. It was pretty hard for my grandparents to take care of me, because I always had sausage for breakfast and I stubbornly insisted on it every day, anywhere I went.

You see, sausage is not exactly a common food for Malayalees, so my poor grandparents had to look for it in a particular store. 

Then, about 7 years later, when I was 12 years old, I made my fourth visit to my grandmother's house. And again, when it came to breakfast, I insisted...on having kanjnji, a very simple porridge consisting of boiled rice and its water. (I'm telling you, it's delicious! Calling it "gruel" is like calling all food "useless!") And, I also insisted on helping to make it! Which made my grandmother so relieved...
