Jokes #5

I seem to be running out of jokes, so I decided to pick one out of Bobanum Moliyum, India's most widely read comic magazine! (If you're still scratching your head, go home!) By the way, did you know there's an English version of it now called Boban and Molly? You can buy it really cheap in Kerala!

Anyway, the joke I'm about to tell is actually a Malayalam pun. So, please bear with me and let me try to explain it all!

Before I begin, I might explain that Boban and Molly are siblings (brother & sister) who have a grown-up friend whom they call GX /chETTan/ in Malayalam. Since this literally means "elder brother," I have changed Chettan's name in my English version to Big Brother. GX is also used in Malayalam to convey respect to those who are slightly older/superior to you.

Here's my rough translation, based on the original joke:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big Brother is relaxing on a chair, petting his little dog (probably a puppy), and Boban and Molly are standing right next to him. Boban has a novel in one hand.

Big Brother: Where did you get that book from?

Boban: Big Sister Suma got it for us from the college library.

Big Brother: Oh, really? Which part's your favorite?

Boban: Aa mukham (That face).

Big Brother suddenly changes his tone.

Big Brother: WHAT? You're wasting your time looking at girls' faces?!

Boban: No, I mean the book's aamukham (preface)...!
