FINAL QUESTION (in this exercise) What is the difference between the two answers for Question #2?

C. He, She, They or His, Her, Their

In Malayalam, there are two words for "he/she/they"; you learned both in this lesson (I hope!). In the following story, you must replace the underlined noun in each sentence with the proper Malayalam word for "he," "she," "they," "his," "her," or "their." (Be consistent! If one pronoun represents A in Question #1, it should represent him for the rest of the story, too!)

1. That man in the picture on that wall was a great Malayalee poet from the 18th century.

2. His name was Kunjannambyar, but he was also known as Nambi or Nambyar.

3. One day, he visited the palace of this monarch, who was the King of Travancore at the time.

4. This king laid out a great feast for Nambi.

5. Nambi ate hundreds of platefuls of rice and even 10 liters of the dessert palapayasam.

6. The king was astonished at how much Nambi's tummy could hold!

7. The king asked Nambi how he could eat so much.

8. "Your Majesty," Nambi said, "when your carriage enters a street, everyone else on the street makes room for you. Similarly, when palapayasam, the King of all Desserts, entered my stomach, all the other food in my stomach made way for it!"

D. Your

There are also two ways to say "your" in Malayalam! How do you say "your" (as in "Your IQ level must be very high!") to the following people?

1. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India

2. Your good friend, Balti

3. A kid named Arjumand who is younger than you

4. Your (new?) neighbor, Jagai, who is the same age as you

5. A Syrian Christian bishop

6. An old but widely respected Hindu yogi

7. Your little brother (if you don't have one, pretend you do!)

8. Your older sister (again, if you don't have one...!)

E. Role Play

This time, you are a college student who is studying temporarily in Kerala. You wish to meet Dr. Endammo Marravy, the local Professor of Malayalam. Unfortunately, Dr. Marravy is very forgetful, so you'll have to be very patient with him (in addition to very being polite)! ("Endammo" means "Oh my gosh!" in Malayalam, and "Marravy" means "Forgetfulness.")

First, though, you notice your friend Nakulan on your way to Dr. Marravy's office.

You: Say, "Hey, Nakulan!"

ȵX: ! BI?

You: Say you're all right (i.e. "there's no problem") and ask, "What's up?"

ȵX: I.

(At Dr. Marravy's office)

You: Greet him politely (say "greetings").

. : ...L?

You: Remind him that your name is (your name here). Ask him how he's doing.

You: Say you are fine. Ask him where he is from. From Thiruvananthapuram?
